POM Types
1. Homopolymer POM
Starting from methanol, if directly polymerized, formaldehyde is formed and POM homopolymer (e.g. Delrin) is formed. For POM copolymer, formaldehyde is converted to trioxane and this is polymerized together with a co-monomer to a POM copolymer (e.g. Hostaform).
2. Copolymer POM
POM homopolymer has a higher crystallinity compared to POM copolymer. On the other hand, the chemical resistance of the copolymer is higher. This leads to a higher hardness for the homopolymer and lower thermal decomposition for the POM copolymer during production and in the field.
Where is POM Used?
It is used in the production of precision parts (measuring instruments, watches, pump assemblies, telephone parts, automobile indicators, etc.), cams, gears, pens, keys, valves, window frames and plastic lighters.

History of POM
Polyoxymethylene (POM) is a type of engineering plastic, also known as polyacetal or acetal. It was discovered by German chemist Herman Staudinger. After his discovery, the polymer did not gain commercial availability due to thermal stability problems.
In the 1960s, DuPont commercialized POM production under the brand name Delrin. A few years later, the US company Celanese began selling its own POM under the name Celcon. A year later, the German chemical company Hoechst began producing polyacetal under the brand name Hostaform.
Later, Celanese, a joint venture between Celanese and Hoechst, became the world’s largest acetal producer. Celanese (part of Celanese), which opened a new POM plant in the Hoechst Industrial Park near Frankfurt, is still the world’s largest producer.
POM Manufacturers
Nowadays, there are more and more players in the POM field in the world. The largest, along with Hostaform and Celcon, are; Delrin with DuPont, Duracon with Polyplastic, UltraForm with BASF, Kocetal with Kolon Plastics, Tarnoform with Zaklady, Yuntianhua with Yuntianhua and BlueStar POM with BlueStar.
In the polyacetal business, more POM brands are seen on the market: compounders, distributors and trading companies have created their own brands, such as Resinex POM.
